Universally recognized that human are not tending to be alone. When we were just little children, we preferred clinging to our parents all the time. As we growing older, we didn’t want to be away from our girlfriends even for a minute. But who is the one that we would go to share everything with for the rest of our life? Yes, that is what marriage means to us.
Nowadays when college students talk about marriage, we always want it to be based on romantic love. But what does marriage really mean when it comes back to Britain in her late 1800’s and early 1900’s?
<Pride and Prejudice> is a typical Jane Austen’s novel that is a story about marriage. This novel shows us how Jane Austen values love and marriage. There are marriages between Jane and Bingley, Elizabeth and Darcy,Lydia and Wickham, Charlotte and Collins.
Jane and Bingley:
Love is certainly the main element of a happy marriage. Jane and Bingley just put this theory into practical. They fell in love with each other at first sight. It’s a classical story of Cinderella. Jane, a beautiful but economically plain lady, met Bingley, a nice and wealthy gentleman, during a ball held by Mr. Bingley during which they share their first dance together. Although her mother acted lack of social graces, Jane acted like a real lady. Her beauty both outside and inside attracted the attention of Bingley. At the same time, our gorgeous heroine was also touched by Bingley’s sunshine smile and tender heart. In a word, they are in love! Unfortunately, the big difference in social standard between them made Bingley confused and with some words from his best friend Darcy he broke up with Jane against his own willing. With a broken heart and destroyed reputation, Jane went back to her old life. But money is never the issue, after a long-time struggle and with the help of Darcy, Bingley finally gathered up the courage to propose to Jane. After all the suffering, they finally had a happy ending. We can see it is love but not money the most important factor in Jane and Bingley’s marriage.
Elizabeth and Darcy:
Looking at the couple of Elizabeth and Darcy, it was obvious that they had been through a lot. From the first pride Darcy and prejudice Elizabeth to the understanding and loving couple, they had a lot of misunderstanding. After cleaning the air, Darcy and Elizabeth ended up together. In this relationship, communication seems to be the most significant factor in marriage.
Lydia and Wickham:
The relationship between Lydia and Wickham was totally a joke. Lydia married Wickham only because he was handsome and a soldier. Wickham chose to settle down for no other reason than that he was given a lot of money by marrying Lydia. Their marriage was based on nothing and doomed to be disaster.
Collins and Charlotte:
After being rejected by Elizabeth, Collins turned to Charlotte, a plain 29 years old girl who happened to be Elizabeth’s best friend. It was not a surprise for us considering her situation that Charlotte gave a “yes” as an answer. Since what she always wanted was a family that was well-off and peaceful, even if there was no emotional attachment between those two at all, thus she would go to have the kind of life she was desperately eager to. What is not so good is, as Charlotte said about her married life, that everything is perfect except for Mr. Collins. This marriage seemed to be stable since the husband worked hard outside while the wife acted properly and was a good housekeeper inside. However we all can see where it was going. Even if they were both satisfied with what they have for now, it is obvious that the only thing that kept this marriage from collapse is their tolerance. Let’s hope this would work.
Marriage could be set up for all kinds of reasons. It might be the permanent love that bound two lovers. It might be the vanity that my husband is handsome and rich. It might be a terrible decision trying to keep up with his life. It might also because those foreigners want to stay at the a certain country. All terrible marriages have different causes, but all happy families share the same secrets of love, communication, respect and trust.
However when it comes to the most important factors of a happy marriage, there will definitely going to be a big argument.
As far as I’m concerned, love is the foundation of marriage. I’ve been watching an American TV series called Desperate Housewives. That’s a TV series mainly talking about the stories of housewives those who seemed to live a perfect life in the suburban, but the truth is that they are actually so desperate that one of the housewives chose to end her life by a gun shot at the very beginning of the series. The main characters are four friends of hers, gorgeous Gabriella, adorable Susan, smart Lynnette and perfect Bree.
Every one of them has a lot of stories about their marriage. Here I am going to talk about Bree’s first marriage.
Everyone in the suburban regarded Mrs. Bree Van de Kamp as the perfect housewife except for her own families. Although she and her husband Rex loved each other, Rex decided to leave her to be free again. They’ve both done something that betrayed the other half. Eventually, they sought a way to forgive each other in the honor of love. Unfortunately, Rex didn’t make it to the happy ending because of a cruelty murder. What I want to say is that no matter how many troubles they’ve been through, as long as there was love, they would always find a way to work it out.

Love is the most beautiful thing in the world while marriage is the most sacred thing of one’s life. Happy marriage is based on love and with love we will sure find the one that will spend the rest of our life with.
Comments: Through the discussion of the different marriages and love, the writer wants to tell us that: an ideal marriage should be based on love and respect. However, Austen’s original viewpoint, in my opinion, is that love is the foundation for a happy marriage, which should also be based on a large amount of money.
