1. Marguerite’s wrong understanding of love
The heroine is Marguerite who called Camille in this novel, because she always brings camellias and people never see her bringing other flowers except camellias. And people give her a name of Camille. Marguerite was a country girl and was poor. Why not live as before? It is clear that money is more important than love for Marguerite at that time. Marguerite can live a poor life with Armand for a period of time just because Armand is different from other men whom she needs to meet for money. When you expect one thing and it just appears at that time, many people will accept it immediately without thinking it over. When Marguerite hopes to live a life like an ordinary people, Armand appears. But Armand just wants a beautiful lover. Marguerite is confused by illusions, and she thinks that he is true and accepts him easily. For Marguerite, she just only wants to find a man to live a kind of life which is different from now. If she really loves Armand, she can solve the problems with Armand’s father and sister. She was a country girl, and life forces her to fall into dust in Paris and become a hooker. Marguerite is an educated person and she can find a job to feed herself in Paris, but she does not do this in that way, and she chooses a quick way to live a rich life—to be a hooker. Her beauty attracts many rich men and they pay a lot of money for her and hope to be her lovers. Although she likes this, she knows that she can’t do this forever. And when she is getting old, nobody will pay money for her and do nothing for her. So she is supposed to give herself a way, and she needs to save money for herself. But she does not do this, and she relies on these nobles to live an extravagant life and develops a habit of squandering money. For example, she has a big room in the theatre. She lives a dissolute night life. Hookers regard chastity as a commodity and sell their flesh, even souls. It is only money here, except personal feelings. Marguerite has suffered the shame and torture, and both flesh and soul are hurt. She says that they are gradually selling themselves’ souls, flesh and beauties; they are watched out and looked down on like refugees by other’s people. People who are around them are greedy. There will be one day that they ruin themselves and others, then they will live like dogs. Marguerite has developed a bad habit of luxury by staying in this circumstance. Her body and heart are hurt, although, she paralyzes herself by playing crazily. She hates this kind of life, but she also likes this kind of life. One person will want to change for another life, if he has one kind of life for a long time. So she wants to find a true lover and tries to live an ordinary life. At this time, Armand appears in her life and falls in love with her at first sight. Just as the books say, pursuing women always has two ways: one is money, the other is emotion. But Armand is not a rich man. So he uses the other way—his true love. He has noticed that Marguerite is weak in body before he knows her actually. During the two months of Marguerite’s lung disease recurrence, Armand goes to her house to inquire her conditions every day. This true love is rare for Marguerite. Camille, a hooker in Paris, had moved since she knew that Armand respected and looked up to her. Armand gets together with Marguerite soon and let she know the true love. Armand is not a rich man because his income is 8000 Francs every year. So Marguerite still keeps in touch with nobles after she gets together with Armand, and if not, she can’t live like before. When two persons fall in love with each other, nothing is important. Marguerite does not meet other rich men. Although Armand has only 8000 Francs every year, they can live comfortably with this money. Finally, they break up because of the opposition from families, and their love cannot overcome difficulties. The true love can suffer all kinds of tests.
2. Armand’s vanity and suspicions
Hookers sell their flesh and emotions, but there is one thing that they won’t sell—their love. They see many false faces, and true love does not belong to them. So Marguerite will not sell her love. She misunderstands the love because Armand cares her and respects her. But Armand never believes her because she always lies so that he will not believe her. Armand just like other people thinks that hookers will not have true love. So his heart is filled with suspicions since he has Marguerite. On the third day, he thinks that Marguerite lies to him, so he writes a letter to insult her. When his friends congratulate him, he regrets because of vanity, and writes a letter for Marguerite’s forgiveness. It is clear that a beautiful lover is more important than true love for Armand. He really wants vanity of having a courtesans rather than an ordinary people’s love. People say that love is beautiful, and it can inspire them to fight. But it is not fit for Armand, and he does not find a job to offer a better life for Marguerite, instead, he sinks into poverty. He addicts into vanity and happy of having a courtesan. He goes to casinos to play. He never thinks that how to earn money and let Marguerite live a normal life as soon as possible. He never thinks about marrying Marguerite, too. He is a vanity person and never decides to stay with Marguerite forever. When he is teased in the theatre, he says that he will get her even he pays all the money to clear the shame. So his aim is just getting Marguerite, and maybe he never believes that Marguerite really wants to get rid of this life. When Marguerite has to write a letter to leave Armand under the stress of Armand’s father, Armand denies her love and abandons her. He does not ask her why, although, he knows that his father opposes and tries his best to part them. It is more pity that Armand does not analysis the reasons as a law graduate. He simply thinks that she leaves him because she cannot stand the poor life and she is greedy for the rich life, even he revenges her cruelly. His heart is so crowd that he never believes that Marguerite loves him and he thinks that he is teased by Marguerite. His heart is filled with hatred. Armand’s weakness, low determination and mistrust lead to Marguerite’s death. Maybe her death is a better end, and if she does not die, she will live a more miserable life. Many selfish people don’t allow that she lives a happy life in that society. But we need to know that if lovers have more belief and less suspicions when they meet difficulties, they will have a happy ending.
3. Vanity and suspicions of love in today’s society
Happy lovers fall into the abyss of pain because of vanity and mistrust in the real world. So the love tragedy between Marguerite and Armand has practical significance. At a crossroad, there are many fashionable women of whom some smoking, others makeup and sit in the luxury cars. All in all, they are addicted into vanity. Women like the love which lovers take a walk hand in hand along the river bank before 20 years. But now love has changed, and it is affected by money, desire and vanity. Poor men cannot afford love, but rich men can do it if he has cars and houses. Now there is only money can affects love and it has turn into transaction in this case. For example, some young men give up his true love to find a rich woman for he can live a better life without working hard. When facing love and money, they always lose themselves and they are willing to be a slave of money. All of this is pity, and the marriage will be not happy without love. At the same time, many people lose his lovers because of suspicions. Vanity and suspicions will ruin the happy life at a degree. Life is short, so why we are mean to lovers. Love must rely on belief. Maybe we are afraid that we may lose them, so there are many mixing things. But if you love him, you must believe him. I believe that everyone wants a happy life, so don’t give up important things for some unimportant things. There is a point that we need to treasure love.
