My university
Talking about university, we often refer to two kinds of attitudes. One is towards the university, the other towards study itself.
I studied in a country high school and at that time I heard little about universities. I just knew those best universities in china, such Qinghua University and Beijing University. I even didn’t know where I would go after I graduated from high school. I had a good fortune to come to Beijing and attend this college.
When I came here full of enthusiasm, others’ attitudes towards this school confused me and even disappointed me. Opinions about a thing always vary. Some were not satisfied with it because they were supposed to go to a better one. Some others just didn’t like it though they had no other choices. But as to me, my first impression of Capital Normal University was very good. Good news was there were also some others taking my view. It’s human nature that we tend to believe or agree with those ideas that can delight us. To decide which one is more objective is a tough task. So when people say things good or bad about the school (of course, these words are not definitely impersonal), I don’t take them seriously. I just try to strike a balance between liking it and disliking it. Compared with other famous universities, it is true that our school is not that perfect, but it still has its own highlights and advantages. The best school may not be suitable to us. Besides, there are many excellent students graduating here every year. Have we ever thought why it’s not us? We should question our own spirit of learning instead of criticizing the school. If we make good use of what we have now, we still have great possibilities to success.
I have been asked for many times that what I can learn from university. It’s quite an annoying but meaningful question. It may cost the whole college life only to get answers like “learn knowledge”, “learn how to learn” or “learn to be a human”. Although there is no accurate answer, we are sure that we are learning things different from what we have learned in high school or in other educational institution in a different way. I think in last two years I was rather confused. Although now I feel much better it is still not enough. The first thing my university teaches me is I have to find out what I should do and what I am doing instead of waiting for someone to tell me that. In addition, we can really gain something only if we are keen on a certain science. If our purpose is a mixture, for example we come here just because our parents want us to, or we study in order to find a good job in the future, we can hardly concentrate our attention totally on study. That’s more dangerous than we don’t know what to do. That’s the second thing my university teaches me, to learn positively. The most helpful thing except teacher’s guide in university is stresses from peers. Nobody supervises us now and I am not good at self-possessing. So I may not pay great effort on my subjects unless I see my classmates do a good job and I feel guilty then. The academic atmosphere here is relatively inspiring. Thus I have cultivated a laudable enterprise. This is how I treat my study.
My attitude towards the university has effect on me for four years, while the attitude to learning can influence me in my whole life. However, the former one does impact the latter. I am not sure whether I handle it well, but I am trying my best to.
