learning Chinese-style summary
The article describes Benjamin's family who got in the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education when they stayed in Nanjing.
By Benjamin's performance. They found the Chinese and American learning ways are very different. In China, the parents would guide their children how to do a thing. They always care about children's success and teach them how to accomplish the task sooner. While the American just gives their children the opportunity to explore and let them know one can solve a problem effectively by oneself.
In education, Chinese teach their children by holding their hand. But, they were just molding and shaping children's performance in any old manner. The idea that learning should take place by continual careful shaping and molding applies equally to the arts.
In creativity, American value originality and independence more than the Chinese does. Chinese children fostered many skills. While a superior way to approach education, perhaps striking a better balance between the poles of creativity and basic skills.
This is an article about Howard Gardner reflects a visit to China and gives his thoughts on different approaches to learning in China and the West.
For a month in the spring of 1987, his wife Ellen and he lived in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing with their 18-month-old son Benjamin. At the beginning, they just wanted to know the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education, but to their surprise, the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education came not in the classroom but in the lobby of the Jinling Hotel where they stayed in Nanjing.
Their key could drop through a slot into a box. Benjamin loved to carry the key around. He also liked to try to place it into the slot. He always failed.
They were perfectly happy to allow Benjamin to bang the key near the key, but Any Chinese staff member nearby would come over to watch Benjamin and, noting his lack of initial success, attempt to assist.
Howard Gardner thinks this is a very interesting phenomenon.
He soon realized that this incident was directly relevant to their assigned tasks in China: to investigate the way of early childhood education(especially in the arts), and to throw light on Chinese attitudes toward creativity.
When he talked the story about the key-slot anecdote with Chinese educators, he knew the difference between Chinese and American ideas of education.
The education idea of China is teaching by holding his hand, but the education idea of American is creativity first.
So, Howard Gardner wants to find a better balance between the poles of creativity and basic skills.
Good writing!
Summary of Chinese education and American's
Today, I will talk about Chinese style and my felling in English learning. First of all, I found that Chinese education had some differences with American's in teaching methods. For example, Chinese educators are paying more attention to children's theoretical knowledge. However, American's educators are laying emphasis on their independence.
Second, Chinese students who are always studying in the classroom, which drawing knowledge from their teachers. Nonetheless in the America, students are usually studying in a free classroom which has more communication with their teachers.
Finally, in China, there is much time that students staying with their teachers or parents, so they can learn more experience from them, and imitating them to do something. In this way, in other words, children are lacking themselves' ideas and creation.
As far as I am concerned, students should be independent. It's important to practise children's independence thinking ability. This is my summary of Chinese education and American's.
