Summary
The second chapter told us some details about the background environment of the story, including the social environment and historical environment at that time.A young woman, named Hester Prynne, has been led from the town prison with her infant daughter in her arms. It is the uppercase letter "A" on the breast. It is to be a symbol of her sin—abadge of shame—for all to see.we can know the people’reaction through the writer’s description---”meagre,indeed,and cold, was the sympathy that a transgressor might look for ,from such bystanders by the scaffold.”She doesn’t tell peole who is the little girl’s father. She is published to live with the symbol.Since then everyone in the town rejects her and her daughter.
Chapter 23 told us the sentencing of Hester. As what the writer said---”....to which the gifts of intellect, rich lore, prevailing eloquence, and a reputation of whitest sanctity, could exalt a clergyman in New England's earliest days, when the professional character was of itself a lofty pedestal. Such was the position which the minister occupied, as he bowed his head forward on the cushions of the pulpit, at the close of his Election Sermon. Meanwhile Hester Prynne was standing beside the scaffold of the pillory, with the scarlet letter still burning on her breast!”At that time ,all people are blindly followed ministers.there is a bitter irony in the text.
