Thomas Hardy’s work Tess of the d’Urbervilles is a classic work all over the world. We will analyze the reasons that lead to Tess’s tragedy. Thomas Hardy was called “Shakespeare in British Novel”. He looked at the world in vision of tragedy. Hardy created a heroine in his novel, he called her Tess. Tess was the victim in the process of capitalistic industrialization and male intrusion. Tess was a beautiful and kind-hearted girl at the beginning, but her mental and physical health was destroyed by two men, she was the victim of prejudice. But those are just some of the reasons. Therefore, we will analysis the reasons for Tess’s tragedy in different aspects. A lot of critics hold that the main reason for Tess’s tragedy was fate. Of course, fate was one of the reasons in some cases. However, her family, her character and the society also caused her tragedy. As a common person, Tess fought with the society helplessly. In the end, she turned out to be the victim of the society who disobeys the morality and ethic.
