The Free Fish
Back from school
this afternoon, I put away my bag and went close to the large round fishbowl in
the living-room. The fish were swimming from side to side freely in the tank. How
I envy them! I picked up some fish food and began to feed them.
I bought the
fish on my way home the other day and my dad bought me the large fishbowl so
that I can enjoy and feed them when I’m free. “How happy you are,” I said to
the fish as well as to myself, “while I have so much homework to do everyday.”
“No, life is
never easy for us.” A voice suddenly came into my ear.
“Who’s talking?”
I looked around as my parents hadn’t come back yet.
“It’s me! I’m in
the bowl.” Then I saw some bubbles rising from the water in the fish bowl. I
was shocked. The fish were talking! I was amazed and asked, “What’s your
trouble?” “Well, there’s a long story.” The fish said. “I used to live in a
large pool. And I can well remember that there was a time when my dear friends
and I were kept spellbound by the water plants and other species in the pool.
But everything has changed since we were caught and brought here.”
“But you are not
happy here?” I asked.
“No. Kept in
such a limited place with no enough friends, no enough sunshine and no fresh
water, how could we? Besides, living in the bowl almost killed us as there’s
not enough oxygen for us to breathe.” The fish sighed with some bubbles rising
to the surface of the water.
“I’m sorry,” I
said, “I didn’t know you were suffering so much. But what can I do for you
then?”
“Just leave us
as we are in the pool. That’d be enough.”
