Functional Grammar is a part of Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar. It illustrates that language is a tool of social interaction, and it must be build up in daily language. (Hu Zhuanglin, 2005:3). The interpersonal meaning implies that people use language to build and keep social links. It also reveals the speaker's attitude, identity and status. The Portrait of a Lady is Henry James best mature masterpiece. Scholars have studied the novel from diverse angle. But there is seldom study based on Functional Grammar. In the novel, there are many conversations about their daily life. But Henry James’s language is insightful and indirect. Therefore, a study of interpersonal meaning can help people have a deeper understanding of the novel and Henry James's unique writing style. The study of the dialogue based on Functional Grammar could explore the different ways of realizing the interpersonal meaning. It can also help people understand the relationship between Isabel and her three suitors and their characters and status. Moreover, it can help people have a better understanding of Halliday's Functional Grammar.

There are five parts in this paper. Firstly is an introduction. The second part is literature review, which including the development of Function Grammar, an overview of interpersonal meaning and introduction to the Portrait of a Lady. The third part is the main body of the paper. It main includes mood analysis and modality analysis. Finally is the conclusion.
