Discourse markers is the essential part of English writing. And discourse markers can make essays more fluent and coherent. Discourse markers is a very common part of discourse. The function of discourse markers is to point out or highlight the semantic relations between discourse units. However, looking at previous studies, we found that, little research has been done on English writing of Chinese middle school students. Therefore, this article takes grade one to grade three of Xi’an No8 middle school in Shaanxi province as the data base. I hope that I can do something in this field.

  This research select one common class students from every grade optional as the objects of the study. After counting and analyzing all texts of all grades, this research can get some result of the use of discourse markers in English writing include the overall frequency of discourse markers, the different use types of discourse markers, the different frequency of different types discourse markers.

  What’s more, this survey shows some questions: (1)Students overuse discourse markers and not master the right way to organize the composition. (2) Students lack of the stylistic consciousness. (3) students underuse discourse markers (4) Students misuse discourse markers.
