To incarnate the culture of the festivals, I abstract the Christmas Day, Thanksgiving Day, the Halloween Day. Then coming the presentations.
In China, we regard the Spring Festival based on 1st January as the most precious one. As well, it is not surprised that it has much more names with the developing of the dynasty, such as "yuan dan", "guo nian"and so on. In ancient times, for one thing, people think "nian" a monster so they set off the fire-crackers and wear red clothes to drive it off. For another, "nian" is the symbol of the good harvest of the crops. We rest our best wishes on it and hope that we can be happy and everything goes well in the next whole year.
During this giant day, we will be busy in preparing many conventions inheriting generation by generation, which contains three aspects generally. To beginning with, fete is one of the holiest activities, especially pilgrimaging our own ancestors. We do settle the memorial tablet or the dead-ee of them on 1st January, after burning incense and lighting candles, families will provide sacrifices and honors for our ancestors. Next, we pray for a prosperous year by cannon fire. Secondly, exorcism cannot be left. Due to the tremendous sounds of the fire-crackers, the devils will be frightened and away from the families. Nevertheless, the meaning of this deed even stands for asking for an auspicious year. Moreover, it is said that Spring Festival couplets and paper-cut also have this function, though today they are the part of the decoration. Thirdly, it's essential to have more entertainment. On New Year's eve, All the members of the family gather to enjoy a reunion dinner, which does good to the relationship of families. As well, it's necessary to visit families and friends to pass on your good wishes for the New Year. At the same time, they may give you red packets as return. Besides, what interests people most is abundant folk performance, such as The Dragon Dance, Lion Dance, Yangko and stilts dancing etc. All of those contribute to constructing the peaceful atmosphere.
The fifth of May is the Dragon Boat Festival. Nowadays, we all believe that it relates to qu yuan, a poet killed himself in liluo river on the day. Then, people threw zongzi and duck egg to protect his body from being bitten by fishes; they also rowed and look forward to saving him. However, we are wrong. In ancient times, The fifth of May is one day to get rid of pestilence and pathogen. Boat race may be used to beg for rain.
The activities in this day also spread as customs. Eating zongzi dated from wei jin period, which was used to convey our worships to our ancestors. With time going on, we have other description about it. Whatever the aim is, this traditional food has its special cultural significance. Also, Dragon Boat races are performed on that day. Furthermore, it's the day that we have to begin resisting from pestilence and pathogen. As a result, realgar liquor is the necessity, which benefits us a lot. What's more, we are expected to wear the scented sachets.
The Mid-autumn Festival receives great attention from the public now. On August 15 of the Chinese lunar calendar, in ancient China, emperors followed the rite of offering sacrifices to the sun in spring and to the moon in autumn. Historical books of the Zhou Dynasty had had the word "Mid-Autumn". A legend named "Goddess Chang'e Flying to the Moon" spread until current times. After chang'e flied to the moon, houyi was so sad that he kowtowed to the moon and made cakes look like the moon in memory of his wife.
With the full moon symbolizing family reunion in Chinese tradition, moon worship has been one of the must actions during the festival. On the evening, we put in the yard from the family altar, put a moon cake, fruit and other tributes, then, families chat and enjoy the full moon in the yard with the moon-cakes. Now, The Mid-autumn Festival also conveys miss of the families.
